Context

The Telegraph was a Brisbane newspaper, published from 1872 to 1947. On July 8, 1938, page 20 carried a column headed Missing Friends, Inquiries, and most of it was about marriage. Holt’s Matrimonial Bureau, in the basement of the O.K. Buildings at 117 Queen Street, ran several ads in it, promising “absolute privacy” and offering its own Lonely Persons’ Club, and two correspondence clubs asked for a club fee and a stamped envelope. The column runs roughly in alphabetical order, by first word.

“View friendship mat.” is the column’s shorthand for with a view to friendship and matrimony. She asks for a working man. The same column carried, through Holt’s, an ad for “A Bright, elderly Lady, own home, car, private means, and good social standing,” who wished to meet a refined elderly gentleman, and one from a farmer of 34 looking for a young lady to take on a dairy farm.
