The Telegraph was a Brisbane newspaper, published from 1872 to 1947. On July 8, 1938, page 20 carried a column headed Missing Friends, Inquiries, and most of it was about marriage. Holt’s Matrimonial Bureau, in the basement of the O.K. Buildings at 117 Queen Street, ran several ads in it, promising “absolute privacy” and offering its own Lonely Persons’ Club, and two correspondence clubs asked for a club fee and a stamped envelope. The column runs roughly in alphabetical order, by first word.
Mat. is short for matrimony, and genuine meant serious. Holt’s ads in the same column offered farmers too: a widower of 37, “owning good, prosperous farm, and very comfortable home, near Brisbane,” wished to meet a sensible domesticated lady, 24 to 34, with an introduction at Holt’s, and the bureau welcomed country clients visiting the city for Brisbane Exhibition Week.
