The Telegraph was a Brisbane newspaper, published from 1872 to 1947. On July 8, 1938, page 20 carried a column headed Missing Friends, Inquiries, and most of it was about marriage. Holt’s Matrimonial Bureau, in the basement of the O.K. Buildings at 117 Queen Street, ran several ads in it, promising “absolute privacy” and offering its own Lonely Persons’ Club, and two correspondence clubs asked for a club fee and a stamped envelope. The column runs roughly in alphabetical order, by first word.
Holts, in this ad and several others in the column, is Holt’s Matrimonial Bureau on Queen Street. Besides introductions, the bureau offered “marriages solemnised, witnesses and car free.” In the same column, “Several men, about 50 years, wish to meet widows or spinsters at Holts,” and a widow of 43 asks to hear from a genuine working gent.
