The Anglo-American Matrimonial Journal was a paper of marriage ads, run from an office in Toronto. Canadiana, the Canadian Research Knowledge Network’s digital collection, holds one issue: Vol. 1, No. 1, December 1886. Its ads are sorted by class and sex, and the price rose with the class: a cent a word for the lower class, two for the middle and three for the upper. Replies went to numbered boxes at the Journal’s office, and a few box numbers are printed twice.
Hers is the last ad in the lower-class women’s column, just above the Journal’s call for agents in every county. Widows advertise in every class in the issue, from this one, with her small store, to a widow of 26 in the upper-class column who reports $125,000 a year and would like to hear from a gentleman of title.
