The Anglo-American Matrimonial Journal was a paper of marriage ads, run from an office in Toronto. Canadiana, the Canadian Research Knowledge Network’s digital collection, holds one issue: Vol. 1, No. 1, December 1886. Its ads are sorted by class and sex, and the price rose with the class: a cent a word for the lower class, two for the middle and three for the upper. Replies went to numbered boxes at the Journal’s office, and a few box numbers are printed twice.
The Journal called itself Anglo-American, and its advertisers wrote from well beyond Toronto: the same issue has ads from England and Scotland, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and India.
Public domain: published in 1886.
