The Hobby Directory, founded in 1946 by a New Jersey schoolteacher, was a typewritten magazine made entirely of personal ads. Members listed age, place, job and hobbies, then C.D., contacts desired. Some members were gay men, who signaled one another through hobbies like physical culture, sunbathing, ballet or wrestling. The last issue appeared in March 1952.
