By the 1950s the formulas of the nineteenth-century column had been clipped to their bones: Prot for Protestant, Yng for young, and Mat for matrimony, short for the older phrase with a view to matrimony. Like several ads in this archive, it names a religion. The same column that day carried two private notices, each to one reader, one to J. and one to a darling. The column ran under the heading Personal & Missing Friends, and Trove’s free run of the Herald ends with 1954.
