The Kalgoorlie Miner, first published in 1895, was the newspaper of the Western Australian goldfields, printed in Kalgoorlie, about 600 kilometres east of Perth. Its classified pages carried a short column headed Matrimonial, and replies usually went to a box number or a pen name at the paper’s office.
It reads like one side of a correspondence that has gone astray: letters from a woman of 50 arrived on Wednesday, an appointment at 8 o’clock was waiting, and the writer, apparently without her full address, used the Matrimonial column to ask her to write again. Unlike most ads in this archive, it gives a street address for replies, in Boulder, the town next to Kalgoorlie; the two merged as the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder in 1989.
Public domain in Australia, where it was published in 1950 without the writer’s name.
Transcribed from the page image on Trove and checked against the original; spelling, abbreviations, and punctuation are as printed, and words broken across lines are rejoined.
