Context

Bane was a Union veteran of the 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry, and the Library of Congress has asked whether he was the tallest soldier of the Civil War: accounts gave his height as anything from 6 feet 5 inches to more than 8 feet, and his pension surgeons most consistently wrote 6 feet 9. He had first advertised in the paper that January, and the Library found no evidence that he ever married. The same column carried two soldiers’ widows from Aurora, Illinois.
