Context

The Express and Telegraph was an Adelaide newspaper, published from 1867 to 1922. Its front page carried advertisements, and among them, in 1888 and 1889, a short column headed Matrimonial. Writers signed with a pen name and had replies sent to a post office, to be collected there.

Port Adelaide is the city’s seaport, about 14 kilometres from the centre, and she had replies sent to its post office rather than to the General Post Office in town, where the Adelaide ads of March 1888 had theirs sent. She gives the age she would like, about 48, but not her own.
