Context

The Anglo-American Matrimonial Journal was a paper of marriage ads, run from an office in Toronto. Canadiana, the Canadian Research Knowledge Network’s digital collection, holds one issue: Vol. 1, No. 1, December 1886. Its ads are sorted by class and sex, and the price rose with the class: a cent a word for the lower class, two for the middle and three for the upper. Replies went to numbered boxes at the Journal’s office, and a few box numbers are printed twice.

She is one of several women in the lower-class column who state their savings: a widow of 40 has $300 and a small store, and a woman of 45 asks for a steady man “worth as much as advertiser, viz., $450.”
